When Plan A doesn’t work…

The alphabet has twenty-five more letters. Which is a good thing, because I think we just hit Plan G? Anyway… We had an appointment with the Atlanta oncologist last Thursday. As if that wasn’t stressful enough, the traffic was worse getting up there and back than I’d ever seen for a doctor’s appointment. The news wasn’t unexpected, but it was far from what I wanted to hear.

The official results of the immunotherapy are in, and the treatment showed, “No discernible effect.” Not the words you want to hear. But, we knew it was a long shot going into it. So, now we have a plan going forward but still no timeline. That part is up to me.

They want me to lose a substantial amount of weight before they proceed with a transplant. When we move forward depends on when I reach that goal. The increased strength and endurance that comes with it will help considerably with both the procedure itself and the recovery. The drugs sap energy from you. So you have to be as fit as possible at the beginning.

They are referring me to a weight loss specialist in Macon. There will likely be some sort of strict diet, then some type of surgery if needed. There’s quite a few different options these days, so we have to wait and see what the specialist decides. After I hit the objective, I will be able to proceed with the transplant.

So, that’s where we are at this point. Basically the same as we were in January, but at least we know that the easier option didn’t work before we moved forward.

  1. You can do this!
I’m learning that I can. The biggest change for me is giving up the term “diet”. Not dieting, but changing my “life” style in order to live. Don’t get me wrong, when God says I’ve done the job he created me to accomplish, I know heaven willl be incredible. However, I am selfish enough to still want to experience more living here with those I love and the awesome world he created.
I will continue to ask God to walk beside me daily. For me food is like alchohol or drugs to some others…my fix when emotions hit extremes or “just because it tastes good”! I have to work to substitute life’s many other goodies! You know, He has given us many other goodies.
As I seek help each day for my journey, I will make the same request for you. Just wanted you to know you aren’t alone in your struggles. I know God hears us!
